“Preston urged the audience to protect the city’s most vulnerable — low income, working class, homeless and immigrants — during the current hostile political climate. Dro spoke about countering cultural erasure by being vocal.

“We all have the obligation to overcompensate for those that aren’t here to represent,” said Dro, noting the declining percentage of Black residents living in San Francisco. “We are operating at a deficit so we have to talk louder. The heavy lifting is a burden, but it’s also an obligation.”

The evening concluded with panelists assigning homework to the audience: Know your rights as a tenant and join a tenants group; show more compassion for the homeless, who are often the most vulnerable and victimized; support the local culture and create secure spaces; know your neighbors and hold police accountable.”
