Board of Supervisors Approves Mayor’s Cruel RV Ban
Yesterday, the Mayor and Board of Supervisors escalated their war on the poor with a citywide RV parking ban. The Board passed the Mayor’s plan on a 9-2 vote. The dissenting supervisors, Jackie Fielder and Shamann Walton, rejected this NIMBY legislation.
There are real issues to solve in this city: astronomical housing costs, drug addiction, gentrification, displacement, police misconduct, environmental racism, and ICE kidnappings of our neighbors. Instead, this Administration is focused on terrorizing the poor: seizing tents, towing RVs, and conducting sweeps. These tactics are designed, as DA Jenkins made clear, to make homeless people more “uncomfortable” in the city.
This legislation will either force RV residents, many of whom are families with children, onto the streets, or force them out of San Francisco. The message of yesterday’s vote is clear: under this Mayor and this Board of Supervisors, people who cannot afford the rents commanded by corporate landlords are not welcome in the City.
Banning RVs – where homeless families reside as a last resort for a safe place in an unaffordable city – is cruel and counterproductive. Our City can and must do better.
