Statement on Black History Month

Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate, acknowledge, and reflect on the immeasurable contributions of Black Americans, while also honoring the legacies and achievements of generations past, acknowledging centuries of injustice, and confronting both the past and ongoing injustices that continue to exist today. As we celebrate, we must also continue to support the ongoing struggle to achieve and ensure racial and economic justice.

Black History Month also serves as a reminder that we must continue to stand in solidarity and support those organizing a movement against the ongoing erasure of Black history, continue to organize for reparations and against policies that continue to do irreparable harm to the Black community, while also continuing to push for a visionary and affirmative Black-centered agenda. There is still much more work to be done -- and we must remain committed to the continued movement toward Black freedom, not just this month but every month.

With Black History Month off to a strong start, I want to share some events that offer opportunities to gather together, both virtually and in person, to celebrate and reflect on this month’s importance.
